Dear Reader,

The United States presidential election tally remains ongoing, but in the meantime, cases of Covid-19 are surging.

Yesterday the country reported at least 1,130 new deaths and 92,660 new cases. The U.S. continues to lead the world in cases of the virus and deaths from it. The number of Americans dying from Covid-19 is currently higher than over the summer, though lower than the spring.

Other countries, including the United Kingdom and Germany, are also experiencing an increase in cases. Unlike the U.S., these countries are implementing restrictions on activity aimed to bring transmission rates down. You can read more about what’s happening in Europe here.

However the election ultimately shakes out, it’s clear the United States is in a league of its own when it comes to dealing with the virus, and has a long way to go.

Here’s what else is new:

  • Case count: There are over 9.3 million confirmed cases in the U.S. and over 47.6 million confirmed cases worldwide. So far over 232,700 Americans have died from Covid-19.
  • The Covid-19 death toll among nurses is now as high as World War I: The International Council of Nurses confirms that 1,500 nurses have died from Covid-19 in 44 countries and estimates that healthcare worker fatalities worldwide could be more than 20,000.
