This 4th of July weekend may be different from years past, but there are still ways to safely enjoy the summer weather. Today I am sharing some of the best reporting from Medium and beyond on how to navigate the pandemic summer, as well as stories to understand the virus right now.

Real quick, here’s what’s new:

  • Daily number of new coronavirus cases in the United States tops 50,000: The new record was hit on Wednesday. The total was 52,789 new coronavirus cases, which is the largest single-day total since the start of the pandemic.
  • The House passed an extension of the Paycheck Protection Program: The bill, which extends aid to until August 8 now heads to President Donald Trump.
  • Herman Cain is hospitalized with coronavirus: The former Republican presidential candidate attended President Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was taken to the hospital Wednesday after contracting Covid-19.
