Some Really Depressing Covid-19 Death Data
If they had died at the same rate as White Americans, at least 14,000 Black Americans would still be alive
The APM Research Lab released new data on the mortality rates from Covid-19, separated out by race. What they found is really discouraging. Here’s the breakdown of Americans that have died from the coronavirus since the pandemic began:
- 1 in 1,625 Black Americans has died
- 1 in 2,775 Indigenous Americans has died
- 1 in 3,550 Latino Americans has died
- 1 in 3,800 Asian Americans has died
- 1 in 3,800 White Americans has died
The group shared that Black Americans are still experiencing the highest rates of death from Covid-19, with mortality rates for Black people being 2.5 times as high as the rates for Asians, 2.3 times as high as Whites, and 2.2 times the Latino rate.
By crunching those numbers, the group shared that if they had died from Covid-19 at the same rate as White Americans, at least 14,000 Black Americans, 1,200 Latino Americans, and 200 Indigenous Americans would still be alive.
The new report is part of the group’s ongoing Color of Coronavirus project, which is monitoring where the burden of the virus that causes Covid-19 is falling. Its goal is to guide policy and community responses to remedy the inequities.
