It’s Time for a Vaccine Reality Check

Optimism is warranted, but so is a healthy understanding of what’s ahead

What a Covid-19 vaccine will—and won’t—do for us. While scientists are hopeful and optimistic for a vaccine, there’s many obstacles ahead, writes Markham Heid. “Even some of those who believe that we’ll have a vaccine in the next year or so say that nothing is certain,” he writes. Why? In part because some new strategies for vaccine development are being deployed and it remains unclear if they will work.
