How People Are Trying to Get Around Mask Wearing

People without disabilities are trying to invoke the ADA to get out of wearing masks.

In a recent viral video, a worker at Gelson’s in Dana Point, California, stops an unmasked shopper from entering the store, explaining she needs to wear a mask to enter, as per store policy. After asking to talk to the manager, the shopper says, “I have a medical condition where I’m not allowed to wear a mask and I’m not required by HIPPA rules and regulations to disclose that.” (That’s not how HIPPA rules work.)

According to Snopes, this claim is based on a “mask loophole” meme circulating on Facebook, which encourages people to invoke both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and HIPPA when asked to wear a mask, neither of which can be applied to shoppers at a grocery store. Read more below.
