5 States Seeing Big Spikes in New Cases

States in the South and West have been hit hard

As the United States continues its premature reopening, the number of states that have reported a rise in new infections in the past two weeks has risen to 29. On Wednesday, Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas reported record-high single-day totals.

The spike in cases is especially sharp in states in the South and West of the United States. California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Arizona have reported the biggest spikes in the past 14 days so far, according to New York Times data.

California

California has set multiple daily records for new cases this week alone, reporting 6,652 new cases on Tuesday and more than 6,000 on Monday. Los Angeles County currently has the highest number of cases in the United States, reporting 89,633 as of Thursday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University data. Los Angeles residents, especially protesters, report that they’re finding it difficult to get tested. North County Jail in Castaic, which has one of the biggest prison outbreaks in the country, reported 1,364 cases on Thursday.
