Covid-19 Might Cause Thyroid Issues, Too
The more scientists study Covid-19, the more it’s clear the virus that causes the disease can wreak havoc on the body in many different ways. As reporter Roxanne Khamsi writes:
The researchers believe that Covid-19, caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, might be a risk factor for an atypical form of thyroiditis, which is characterized by inflammation of the thyroid that can lead to thyrotoxicosis. Viral thyroiditis, also known as subacute thyroiditis, is a mystery in that doctors aren’t sure exactly which viruses can cause it, but researchers have found circumstantial evidence linking it to everything from influenza to hepatitis.
“Lots of viruses can affect the thyroid,” one expert says. “So why not SARS-CoV-2?”
