Exactly a year ago, on March 1, 2020, the first Covid-19 case was confirmed in New York City. Craig Spencer MD MPH, an emergency room physician in New York, saw his first Covid-19 patients a few days after that. Today, in Elemental, he published a heartbreaking letter expressing everything he wishes he could have told himself at the beginning of the pandemic. To read it is to experience the recent ups — and the many downs — of the past year through the eyes of a frontline worker.

“You’ll try to warn people and politicians in the rest of the country, but so many won’t listen,” he writes. “It will be different a year from now. There will be a reason for hope. And your whole family will still be here.”
