A Covid-19 Update From a Former CDC Director
Dr. Tom Frieden, a former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published an insightful update on the current state of the pandemic in the U.S. He notes that while it seems the U.S. is over the holiday surge, cases and hospitalizations and deaths are still very high. With the new variants spreading, people need to proceed with caution.
One interesting point he makes is that reported cases of Covid-19 don’t necessarily reflect community risk:
For example, New York has a higher rate of Covid than Tennessee, but Tennessee tests at a rate that’s three times lower, with a much higher percent positivity. Tennessee is likely diagnosing a smaller proportion of its Covid cases than New York, which means the actual risk in the community is higher in Tennessee, even though reported case rates are lower.
